Research Context
The theatre approached the design program seeking a solution for their hall, expressing dissatisfaction with their current installations. Their goal was to transform the space into a “third place” where people would feel welcomed and encouraged to gather. Through our research on the concept of third places and an analysis of their existing installations, we identified their real needs.
It became evident that the furniture was outdated and mismatched, and there was a lack of designated areas, leaving the hall feeling empty and uninviting.
Design Solution
Our proposed furniture set was designed with a focus on effectively guiding users naturally through the space while enhancing aesthetics and promoting favorable layouts for gatherings. Based on our research findings, we concluded that a mix of fixed and mobile furniture would be the ideal solution, providing visitors with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a vibrant, living space.
The layout was carefully designed to facilitate instinctive movement, allowing visitors to navigate the hall comfortably and encouraging social interaction.
Materials and Methods
The furniture was designed using sustainable and robust materials, including pine, anti-discoloration commercial acrylic, and waterproof fabric. Prototyping was conducted to test the functionality, comfort, and dimensions of the furniture pieces, ensuring they effectively met user needs.
User Feedback
After proposing the design, we gathered feedback from theatre staff and the architectural jury. Responses were favorable, indicating increased comfort, a positive atmosphere, and successful problem reframing. The jury, composed of architecture firm owners, theatre directors, and faculty members, declared our solution the winning proposal of the class project.
Personal Reflection
This project deepened my understanding of how thoughtful design can transform a space into a community hub and the importance of connecting with the affected community. It reinforced the significance of creating environments that invite social interaction and foster a sense of belonging.
Outcomes
Following the proposal, which included a submission approved by a professional interior design firm owner, the theatre mentioned that raising the necessary budget for non-profits can be challenging. However, this process helped them better prepare and understand the kind of investment needed to achieve a project that addresses their challenges.
