Design Intent
Led by the intention of discretion and a desire to differentiate from traditional display systems, the creative process of this project was influenced by minimalism and seamless integration into the living space.
Definition of Fika
Fika [fee-ka]: A Swedish term that signifies a moment to slow down and appreciate the good things in life.
Design Philosophy
The design of Fika puts visual pieces forward, allowing users to quickly perceive the space that separates them from the wall, drawing their attention. This encourages users to pause and take time to appreciate the visual representations that surround them in their daily lives—elements they may have overlooked due to habit.
User Interaction
Fika enables users to reconnect with their surroundings by showcasing the little things they have carefully chosen for their personal space. This thoughtful interaction fosters mindfulness and appreciation for everyday objects, enhancing the overall experience of the space. To protect the art displayed, magnets with a felt underside were designed to hold the pieces securely on the plaque, while supplementary magnets were added to the lower part of the artwork to prevent it from rolling over time.
Materials and Methods
Made from aluminum and coated with powdered paint, the materials selected for Fika were chosen for their aesthetic qualities and durability, contributing to seamless integration with various interior styles. Prototyping was employed to test the effectiveness of the design in highlighting personal items while ensuring stability and functionality. The product was thoughtfully designed for mini-production using CNC cutting, sheet bending, and manual finishing techniques such as wedge sanding.
Target Audience
This project is designed for individuals seeking to enhance their living environments, particularly those who value minimalism and mindfulness in their daily lives. The product is well-suited for interior design enthusiasts, design-savvy individuals, and illustration art collectors.
Feedback and Testing
Initial feedback from potential users highlighted the design’s ability to encourage moments of reflection and appreciation. Iterations were made based on this feedback to refine the user experience, and product demand was conveyed during a product exposition to peers.
Expected Impact
The implementation of Fika aims to create a more mindful living environment, allowing users to slow down and appreciate the curated objects in their space, ultimately enhancing their overall well-being. Currently, this object is installed on my apartment wall, adding dimension to my art display and reminding me daily to take time to appreciate the decorations I carefully curated.
